The improvement of interchangeable parts through what’s now known as the American system of manufacturing started in the firearms industry at the U.S. Federal arsenals within the early 19th century, and became broadly used by the top of the century. Muslim engineers in the Islamic world made extensive use of hydropower, along with early uses of tidal energy, wind energy, fossil fuels such as petroleum, and large manufacturing unit complexes . A variety of industrial mills were employed within the Islamic world, including fulling mills, gristmills, hullers, sawmills, ship mills, stamp mills, metal mills, and tide mills. By the 11th century, every province throughout the Islamic world had these industrial mills in operation.
